Arches National Park

Images from Arches National Park - Moab, Utah

Balanced Rock

FolioHD - Balanced Rock.jpg

Though there are many such geologic formations to which this appellation is applied, the prominence of this one - in Arches National Park, Utah - is nothing short of spectacular.

At an estimated weight of 3500 tons, this massive boulder on a pedestal stands in contrast to the delicate arch formations which, by their nature, present images of connectedness, whereas this is a pillar of solitude.

Much more colorful during the sunset and sunrise hours of the day, I didn't plan adequately for images during those times. In fact, we just kind of stumbled into town and made this impromptu visit and were quite pleased with what we came away with. We will return to Arches, for certain!

Park Avenue Sunset

Entering Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, the first significant formation you reach is the rock formations surrounding the Park Avenue Trailhead.

After spending the bulk of our first day in Moab in Canyonlands National Park, it was magnificent to enter this park late in the afternoon as the sun was setting and see this vibrant color reflecting from the Park Avenue walls. I've traveled a lot of this country and the world; nothing in my experience prepared me for the grandeur of southern Utah. It is breathtaking!

Not Just About Arches...

FolioHD - Not Just About Arches.jpg

There are a number of fascinating rock formations in Arches National Park, not merely the arches, themselves. These rock formations are just off the trail that takes hikers around the windows arches. At sunrise, with the backdrop of the clouds and La Sal Mountains, they were visually irresistible. Arches NP, Moab, Utah, USA.

Last Light Through the South Window

One of the more famous attractions in Arches National Park is the Windows Section with three distinct arches on the loop trail, this one, North Window, and Turret Arch. It's hard to get time here when they are not crowded with people, but on the 3rd of July at dusk, just after an early evening shower, it was magical.

Sunrise Through the Windows

There are so many wonderful places to see the sunrise in this country. This is my attempt to catch what it looks like through both windows at Arches National Park, Utah.

Offset Turret Angle

Turret Arch in Arches National Park is such a strong outcropping situated just a few hundred yards from the Windows Arches.

As the summer sun rises, the light illuminates different parts of the turret through and around the windows to the east. I particularly liked when the spire lit up like a red torch, as seen here.

Rainbow Turret

At sunrise, with the light shining through the windows to the East, the shade patterns, along with the natural vegetation created this rainbow style image at the Turret Arch. This was among the last images I took at this location, and consider myself very fortunate to have captured it before moving on. 4 July 2014 at Arches National Park, Moab, Utah, USA.

Sighting in the Turret at Sunrise

Turret Arch one of the many famous rock formations at Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, USA. This picture was taken just after sunrise on Independence Day (4 July) 2014.
