Canyonlands National Park

Images from Canyonlands National Park - Utah

Canyonlands Ultra-Wide Panorama

Looking up toward the Island in the Sky region of Canyonlands National Park, from the point in Shafer Canyon where the Potash Road and the Shafer Trail come together. Four image panorama. View this as large as possible!

Hoodoos of Canyonlands

Canyonlands National Park like most of Southern Utah on the Colorado Plateau has unique rock formations called hoodoos.

The formations are caused by the freezing and thawing of water with the fissures of the rocks that sit at high elevations, causing them to erode in these pillar formations, often with large crowns at the top.

The Shafer Canyon Trail road passes by several formations of hoodoos that are spectacular, even in the harsh light of mid-day sun.

Island in the Sky District

The northeastern section of Canyonlands National Park is called the Island in the Sky District.

Entering along Shafer Canyon Trail Road reveals the magnificently colored mesas and rock strata, along with the green vegetation, despite the hot, arid summer climate.

Shafer Canyon Overlook

Junipers must be one of the most resilient trees on earth. With average lifespans between 400 and 750 years, these hearty organisms thrive in some of the most hostile, arid environments, with little soil or water, massive temperature variations and high winds.

The trunks we see are twisted by the winds over time and give a definite sense of the aging process.

Shafer Canyon

One of the more scenic routes from Moab into Canyonlands National Park is a drive along Potash Road (UT 279) that leads to Shafer Canyon Trail. From this vantage along the trail. looking east, you clearly see Dead Horse Point State Park and the La Sal Mountains in the distance.

Shafer Canyon Trail looks easy here, but just to the west is a very steep and narrow set of switchbacks leading up a cliff face to join Grand View Point Road near the Island in the Sky Visitor Center. The road requires a 4x4 vehicle and should only be driven by experienced people in ideal conditions. On this July day, we were lucky to be ahead of the clouds you see here, which later deluged Moab for about 45 minutes.

Shafer Trail Road

Beneath the Island in the Sky of Canyonlands National Park is the Shafer Canyon. Entering the park from this direction is fantastic because it culminates with the incredible switchbacks of the Shafer Canyon Trail on the climb to the Visitor Center on Grand View Point Road.
