Olympic National Park

Images from Olympic National Park - Washington

Elder Survivor

Olympic National Park is home to a temperate rain forest with old growth trees, like this western red cedar, that have grown and protected the area for hundreds of years.

The thick bark on these trees can withstand fire and allows them to thrive in a myriad of conditions. The 12-14 feet of rain the area receives each year helps keep these trees well nourished. The mosses, ferns and lichens create a jungle-like atmosphere that seems out of place so far north.

Marymere Falls

In the rainforest along the rim of Lake Crescent, is the highest waterfall in Olympic National Park. Nestled in tall cedars and feed by Falls Creek running down from the Aurora Ridge, Marymere Falls drops about 90' to a small pool, which then feeds a smaller fall into Barnes Creek.

The northwestern and western reaches of Olympic NP are so very different from the images more frequently seen from Hurricane Ridge, looking toward the Olympic Mountains from the east. This area is dense, lush, verdant temperate rainforest, with massive cedar and hemlock trees, ferns, and plenty of rainfall.

Easily accessible from US 101, this waterfall is a great hike for families and people with disabilities.

Named for the Gods Themselves

Mt Olympus with peaks named Athena, Hermes, Icarus, Aries, Poseidon, Aphrodite and Mercury, among others, is one of the many highlights of Olympic National Park.

Originally designated a National Monument in 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt, his cousin, Franklin, made this location a National Park in 1938. While most people are very familiar with the views from Hurricane Ridge, the diversity of this park is amazing, with the Hoh and Quinault Rainforests and the beaches and Olympic Wilderness along the coastline.

This image was captured from along the Obstruction Point Trail near Elk Mountain.
