Pacific Lights

Images of American lighthouses on the Pacific coast - California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii

Cattle Point Lighthouse

In the mid-19th century, the Hudson's Bay Company built a ranch on the southern end of San Juan Island in Northern Puget Sound, Washington. A navigation lantern has helped to guide mariners through the Strait of Juan de Fuca since 1888, but this lighthouse was actually built in 1935. This photo was just after sunrise on 5 April 2009.

Cattle Point Sunrise 2018

Cattle Point Lighthouse was built by the US Coast Guard in 1935 to guide ships transiting the Inner Passage of the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the Pacific into Puget Sound.

One of the iconic images of the San Juan Islands, it was added to the San Juan Islands National Monument in 2013. The point was named after the Hudson's Bay Company established a ranch here in 1853.

It is a great location to catch sunrise; on clear days offering views of the Olympic Mountains to the Southwest, Mt Baker and the North Cascades to the northeast, and Mt Rainier, southeast of Seattle.

On this early summer day, however, I was simply able to capture some of the colors from a cloudy sunrise.

Golden Hour - Lime Kiln Light Panorama

Overlooking Dead Man's Bay from Lime Kiln Point on San Juan Island in Washington State, Lime Kiln Light was constructed in 1914 to guide mariners through the Haro Straits between the United States and Vancouver Island, Canada.

Magic Sunset - Lime Kiln Light

Lime Kiln Light is part of Lime Kiln Point State Park on the western edge of San Juan Island in Washington State.

One of the best places to observe Orcas from land, Lime Kiln Point State Park is a popular tourist destination, which also offers magnificent views of Vancouver Island, Canada, just across the Haro Strait.

On this evening in June, despite the heavy cloud cover, I caught some of the beautiful colors of the trees aglow with the golden sunset light. Truly a magical scene!
